The Tepper's Building was originally a dry goods supply store that was later expanded into five stories as the largest department store in the downtown area of Selma (built in 1907).
Now over one-hundred years later, the building is being brought to life after being vacant for nearly 40 years. Plans for the space include a ice cream parlour, coffee shop, and deli on the first floor, along with renovated meeting and office spaces on the upper floors.
This comprehensive project includes the renovation of all the exterior and interior elements. The exterior, load bearing brick walls and interior wood-frame is dressed in a romanesque style stucco fascade. Massive arched windows with keystones cap four window bays that match the interior structural order. The historical architectural character of this building is delicately being preserved along with a restoration of the first and second floor storefront. The new storefront will make a strong connection to the street level with large picture windows, oversized doors with a small second floor balcony above, and exterior lighting. This connection is important to create a more personable scale, and sense of community at the street level, adding life and energy to the downtown area.
The design of the interior will be a balanced blend of modern and historical elements to create a fresh new space. This will be achieved through the preservation of key architectural elements alongside new finish materials, coupled with new lighting, appliances, and technology throughout. Exposed brick walls, decorated columns, and original exposed riveted steel colomns, will make up the interior structural elements. Renovated hardwood flooring combined with new floor tile, custom wood cabinetry, marble countertops, and modern interior furnishings will be woven together to accomplish this balance of modern-historic space. A planned curved wood staircase, glass elevator and vaulted ceiling, will open the space above and connect the first and second floor spacially and visually.
This re-invigorated design of the tallest building in the city of Selma will act as a beacon of light and serve to create a fresh start in the community.
