Freedom Foundation Hosts First Annual
Memorial Day Water Olympics

(May 26, 2008) The Freedom Foundation Youth Activities Planning Committee will celebrate Memorial Day 2008 with its first annual "International Water Olympics" for the youth of Selma and Dallas County.  The planning committee has invited kids from Keith, Dallas County, Southside, Morgan Academy and Selma High School.  They anticipate that 100+ kids will show up to Selma's Valley Creek Park Wellness Track, where they can march in during the "opening ceremonies" parade, soak each other with water balloons, and skid down a giant slip 'n slide, to cool off from the summer heat.

Youth Activities Planning Committee volunteer Lindsay Ehlers says "What better way to celebrate Memorial Day, than to provide a fun event where kids from different backgrounds can come together and enjoy themselves?  That freedom to be together is what people fought and died for, and it's an honor to offer a safe place for the kids to have fun."

The Youth Activities Planning Committee alternates monthly service events and social events for the youth in Dallas County, and is looking forward to the summer months when kids are out of school and seeking activities to participate in.  In addition to the planned social activities, the Activities Committee will team up with the Riverview Neighborhood Association in May to remove trash, rotten lumber, vines, and weeds from a property off of Alabama Avenue.  They also plan on helping with the Selma City Schools Uniform Drive this summer, as well as helping the SEMO Cycling Club clean up trails across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Youth Activities Planning Committee Volunteer Matt Wynalda says "these projects and social events fall right in line with what the Freedom Foundation seeks to do in Selma: provide positive events in our community, and allow the youth to have fun and come together."
