Selma Youth Participate in MLK Day of Service

(January 18, 2008) On Monday, January 20 local middle and high school students will join together in cleaning up three neighborhoods in the city. These students are joining in the National Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, and making this day “off” from school, a day “on” for the community. Nearly 75 volunteers are expected to participate in the community clean up day. The City of Selma and the Freedom Foundation partnered together to make this service day happen.

“The Freedom Foundation and the City of Selma wanted to provide a way for young people in the community to give back, do something productive with their time, and help make a difference in the community. This was a great opportunity for students to use their day off school to meet kids from other schools and work together,” said Shawn Samuelson, Chair of the Board for the Freedom Foundation.

At 1:00 pm on Monday afternoon the volunteers will gather on the steps of City Hall to split into teams. Mayor Perkins will speak to the group before they head off to their work sites. Volunteers will be focusing on the three areas of the community, which were identified by city council members as needing clean up.

Clean up sites:

1. The area by Cedar Park School where kids walk to and from school
2. Water Ave., between Broad St and the Old Depot Museum and Mulberry Rd.
3. Arsenal Place, by Water Ave. between Church and Mabry
