[FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE]

2nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Community Celebration

(January 15, 2008) On Sunday, January 20th at 7:00 pm at the Performing Arts Center the Freedom Foundation will host a celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King. The evening will include performances from local high school students, special music tributes and the premier of “The Brown Chapel Story” a historical video depicting Brown Chapel’s role in the civil rights movement.

“It is an honor to host this special tribute to Dr. King and his vision. We have worked hard to bring a variety of people from the community together to be apart of the program. We want to provide a special night for the entire community to celebrate, recognize and appreciate the work that Dr. King did during his life, as well as the work that continues in our community today,” said Mark Duke, Freedom Foundation President.

During 2007, the Freedom Foundation worked closely with Rev. Jackson and the members of Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church to produce a video telling the Brown Chapel story and the church’s role in the civil rights movement. The video includes interviews from church members and other community members that remember Dr. King speaking at Brown Chapel. It also includes the last interview with Rev. P.H. Lewis before he passed away last fall. Rev. Lewis was the pastor of Brown Chapel in 1965.

“We are pleased to share The Brown Chapel Story with the community at the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Celebration. Preserving and sharing the history is an excellent way to honor Dr. King and the work he did in Selma,” said Rev. Jackson, the Pastor of Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Brown Chapel plans to show the historical video to tourists that come to visit the church, as well as to 4th grade students in February during Black History month.

“Brown Chapel was an important part of the civil rights history in Selma, and it is a symbol of hope to the community. We are very thankful that we have captured the church’s history on film and can share that with visitors and school children for years to come. It is important to us that we continue to preserve Brown Chapel’s history, and share her stories with the world,” said Nancy Sewell, Chairperson of the Historical Restoration Committee that oversaw the production of the video.
